|First Appearance||1 March 2007|
March 2007, he visits Bert Atkinson and his grandson Jay Brown when Bert is trying to get a residency order for Jay to live with him permanently. Jay charms Derek, offering him a cup of tea and talking to him politely, impressing him.
October 2008, he attempts to sort out Jay's foster care problems when Billy Mitchell offers to care for him, as Jay does not want Dawn Swann to be his foster mother. Derek inspects the flat above The Queen Victoria public house, and allows Jay to stay with Billy, despite Roxy Mitchell's messiness.
The following month he visits Phil and Peggy Mitchell to say that Louise's mother Lisa Fowler has made an application to see her daughter. Derek explains that the final decision is not up to Phil and his mother Peggy Mitchell says that Derek is a typical social worker – an interfering, home-wrecking busybody. Derek responds sarcastically and leaves. When Peggy returns Louise to Lisa, they contact Derek again, and when he arrives, Phil steals his bag to get Lisa's address.
9 April 2015, he attends to see Kat and Alfie Moon after Kat tried to commit suicide to asses her but Kat was unwilling to talk and Derk left. In July 2015, Derek visits Shirley Carter and Buster Briggs to discuss them having custody of their granddaughter, Jade Green.
4 May 2016, he visits 89 George Street to discuss whether Jay Mitchell can still live in there with Billy Mitchell, Honey Mitchell, Will Mitchell and Janet Mitchell because he is on the sex offenders register.
He returned to speak with Honey Mitchell again on 26th August 2016 about jay having drugs in the house and that if Jay Mitchell continued to stay there Will Mitchell and Janet Mitchell could be taken into care.
